My mother and I took a trip to Bali in June 2009. It was her first time there.

We took a plane and flew to the Grand Canyon.

We were at the sunny beaches of Cabo San Lucas

They filmed the battle scenes in the movie Troy here

You told us to take a walk through the streets of old Mazatlan
so we did

We wondered if you walked the same streets as we did
and took pictures of the same views as us

were you here?

We were in Puerto Vallarta searching for something

We needed to find it so desperately… you and I

We walked around the coastal heat… sand and dust
sand and dust

Is there a demi god somewhere who can help us?

Perhaps there is an angel somewhere…

but it was not to be
we walked and walked

How do you lose something you have never found?
we booked a cab to drive us to the airport
we waited at my void deck

it was my birthday. i had spent the bulk of the night before staring at myself in the mirror
watching myself leave my 20s behind

we sat next to a lone traveler on the plane
was he going to bali on holiday? did he have a south east asian love child to vist?
was he there to escape?

we arrived at denpasar airport.
there was a scare – we thought we had lost j’s luggage

no matter.the luggage was found.
the journey
continues

we ended the day with a bottle of champagne.
i had by then forgotten that it was my birthday.

at this point, my black and white hungarian film ran out
we spent the rest of the holiday in colour…
we were there the fall of 2005

we drove past rodeo drive
and stayed at the w hotel san francisco

where did all that time go?

the beauty of route one

still warms my heart

and makes me want to return

to be reminded of how huge the world is

and the possibilities that open up to you underneath the sheltering sky

is exhilarating

to be reminded that there are still so many places to go
and things to do

and to know that “life is a constant journey ahead” is not just a metaphor

new york

where i smelt the burning

and watched the living live

just one more
one more
one more
reason
to return
