Husband would accuse me of being silly,
and I, him.

and because I am the one with the camera
I have the upper hand

On 28 March 2009, a group of unknown women took control of a leading feminist group called AWARE during its AGM.
It later transpired that these women were members of the same Christian Church with alleged rightwing fundamentalist leanings. They told the press that they were unhappy with that they perceived to be AWARE’s pro-gay/pro-lesbian slant in its programmes and wanted to step in to bring about a change.
Never before has the term “Steeplejacking” ever been used in this country, especially since it has always prided itself in being a secular state, made up of people of various races and religions.
The nation was therefore transfixed by the saga.
The ousted “Old Guard” of AWARE convened an EGM to seek to pass a resolution for a vote of no-confidence against the new ExCo.
2 May 2009 was the EGM date.
More than 3000 men and women turned up for the EGM. Many were new members of AWARE, having signed up at the last minute simply to vote at this EGM.
These pictures were taken during the 7-hour long meeting.

Victory!

Final count:
1414 – yes to removal of ExCo
761 – no to removal of ExCo

We have big plans for the Red Room.
It will be a place to hang.

and watch the going-ons in the neighbourhood

it will be a place to get work done

if only we can motivate ourselves…

we booked a cab to drive us to the airport
we waited at my void deck

it was my birthday. i had spent the bulk of the night before staring at myself in the mirror
watching myself leave my 20s behind

we sat next to a lone traveler on the plane
was he going to bali on holiday? did he have a south east asian love child to vist?
was he there to escape?

we arrived at denpasar airport.
there was a scare – we thought we had lost j’s luggage

no matter.the luggage was found.
the journey
continues

we ended the day with a bottle of champagne.
i had by then forgotten that it was my birthday.

at this point, my black and white hungarian film ran out
we spent the rest of the holiday in colour…

with words
with a look

in circles

my love affair
with black and white holga portraits

continues…
